China Telecom & China Netcom

Mar 15, 2009

China Telecom and China Netcom are two major ADSL internet services providers in China, each running serrated lines across the county. The users from Telecom and Netcom always experience slowdown when visiting each other’s networks. It is know as “North- South Exchange Visting” Prolem, since Netcom monopolizing the ADSL business in North China while China Telecom do the same in the South.

Many internet users complain that the longest distance on the Internet is not between China and US, but between China Telecom and China Netcom.

Below are briefs about China Telecom and China Netcom

China Telecom provides fixed-line telephone services to 216 million subscribers as of April 2008, and broadband internet access to over 38 million subscribers, providing approximately 62% (46 Gb/s) of China’s internet bandwidth. On June 2 2008, China Telecom announced that it would purchase China Unicom’s nationwide CDMA business and assets for 110 billion RMB, giving it 43 million mobile subscribers. On 7 January 2009, China Telecom was awarded CDMA 2000 license to expand its business to 3G telecommunication.

The company was formerly a state-owned monopoly, but its assets in the country’s 10 northern provinces were transferred to China Netcom in 2002, leaving China Telecom with the 21 southern provinces. Although the two companies are free to compete across the whole country, Telecom still has an overwhelming market share in the south, while Netcom dominates the north.

China Telecom has been listed on the Hong Kong and New York stock exchanges since 2002, but the Chinese government still retains majority ownership.

China Netcom, full name China Netcom Group Corporation Limited, abbreviated CNC, was originally formed in August 1999.

It is a provider of wire-line telecommunications services in mainland China, mainly to areas in the north of China. The firm is building a new broadband Internet backbone across the country. It is widely seen as the number two fixed- line operator in mainland China after China Telecom, and operates a semi-mobile PAS or xiaolingtong system.

As well as offering ADSL internet services (not always available outside of north China), the company offers internet colocation services and is a leading provider of connectivity to China’s so- called ‘IP telephone’ shops, who offer discount rate, walk-in telephony services to the general public across China.

Unfortunately, none of the isps is good for oversea clients. There are data Centers using what we call “double lines” i.e., using networks of both China Telecom & China Netcom, though it is still slow to oversea clients, better than a single line anyway.
